Biography
Manuchehr Sahbai; conductor, Ph. D. in Arts and music and solo oboist, was born in Tehran. After primary school he studied oboe at the Tehran Conservatory of Music under Anton Kadletz, composition under Hossein Nassehi and piano under Shafighe Sedghi. Graduated from the Conservatory, at the age of 18 he was engaged as a solo oboist in Tehran Symphony Orchestra. In his last years of residence in Iran, he was professor at the Conservatory of Music, University of Fine Arts and School of Iranian Broadcasting Corporation. As a virtuoso oboe player he gave also numerous concerts with orchestra, as well as triumphant concerts in other major cities of the country, cooperating with Rudaki Hall, Tehran Philharmonic Society, Jeunesse Musicale de l'Iran and Iranian National Television.
1975 he moved to Europe where he continued his studies in oboe, musicology and conducting with Heinz Holliger (Freiburg i. Br.), Pierre Pierlot, Maurice Bourgue und Pierre Dervaux (Paris), Milan Horvath (Salzburg), Franco Ferrara (Siena) and Sergiu Celibidache (Munich).
In 1976 Manuchehr Sahbai took part in a virtuosity competition in France and won the first prize. From 1975 til 1979 he even taught at Offenburg Music School, followed by 12 years with the Sinfonieorchester St. Gallen as a solo oboist and frequent conductor. In the same year he was invited to become Professor of oboe and conducting at the Landeskonservatorium für Vorarlberg in Feldkirch and was awarded the professorship by the Austrian government. The orchestra of this Conservatory under his baton won the first prize of several European competitions.
In 1987 and 1989 he was invited as a guest professor to teach in master classes in Hong-Kong, Japan, Taiwan and Singapoor, where he performed several concerts.
As a music researcher he presented two theses at the Université des Sciences Humaines in Strasbourg and received his Ph.D in arts and music.
In 1995 he completed his first thesis on Igor Stravinsky's Rite of Spring titled "Le Sacre du Printemps d'Igor Stravinsky, genese d'une partition a travers l'étude de ses esquisses, followed by another dissertation in 1996 titled "Des Fluctuations de l'écriture de la partition du Sacre du Printemps d'Igor Stravinsky.
Since 1993 he had been involved in studying the history of iranian symphonic music and iranian composers. Out of these researches and studies has issued a brilliant dissertation (La musique polyphonique persane, 1868-1998) and the highest academic degree:

At the Present Prof.DDr.Manuchehr Sahbai lives in Switzerland and Austria and has a very active international conducting career with well-known orchestras such as the Pasadena Symphony, Teplice Philharmonic, Orchestra Sinfonica di Bologna, Sinfonieorchester St. Gallen, Archi di Praga, Bulgarian State Philharmonic, Tehran Symphony Orchestra and many others. He discovered, revised, premiered and recorded many unpublished symphonic works by persian composers.
since november 2007 he is principal condutor and artistic director of Tehran Symphony Orchestra.
